Semen Sample Collection





  • Ideally the sample should be collected in a private room near the laboratory. (if they are collecting from home they should be told to bring the sample soon after the collection and to keep the sample near body temperature to avoid temperature fluctuation.)
  • It should be obtained by masturbation and entire ejaculate should be collected.
  • The man should be given clear instructions concerning the collection of the semen sample. These should emphasize that the semen sample needs to be complete and that the man should report any loss of any fraction of the sample.
  • The container used for collection should be sterile and non-toxic for  Spermatozoa.

  • The sample should be collected after a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 7 days of sexual abstinence. 
NOTE –  Recent (particularly febrile) illness, should be recorded and taken into account in interpreting the results of Semen Analysis.
